Essential: Values of Jesus People 3-25-18

Jesus spent years with His disciples teaching and preaching, healing and working miracles. They watched Jesus in every part of life, learned a culture, a set of values, caught a vision for God’s plan for them.

When Jesus was preparing for the end He got laser focused with His disciples about the work he was leaving them for, the kind of community they were called to be. This month as we lead up to Easter we will be looking at the mission of God in the world and how we can participate as Redemption Hill.

Finding Home: Now is the Time (12-24-17)

We know we are supposed to go “home” for Christmas, but the problem is, we don’t know where Home is.

Is it the town where I grew up or the town I live in?

Is it my one bedroom apartment with my over-weight cat, or my grandma’s farm in Oregon?

This is the central question of  the Christmas story.

We are aching for our true home, a familiar heart-ache that seems to beat louder this time of year, a particular carol of unease.

Christmas is the story of us feeling alone, knowing we aren’t where we belong. Living in exile. So God leaves His true Home, and makes his home with us, so that we might find our true home in Him.

The Essential Jesus: The Light (11-5-17)

We all want to get beyond our hangups, our prejudice and see the real thing. Who was this historical Jesus and what did He say? What did He do? What does it mean for us today. Studying John Chapter 3

Simple and Easy

Learn this secret formula.

Train for years.

Have a firm grasp on the whole picture.

Have answers to every question.

Plan, prepare and design for success.

As a culture we are convinced that we can control outcomes in our lives, in our work, in our businesses if we just do a better job planning. And in many ways this is true.

But what if the spiritual life is different. What if there is this upside-down logic to learning the ways of God that grate against our western sensibilities?

What if the way of following Jesus is incredibly simple and easy to start?

Maybe we don’t have to know everything to get started.

Jesus was trying to tell His followers that His way was different than the pharisees of HIs day. They had lists of hundreds of rules that they taught their followers to do.

Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

27 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

-Matthew chapter 11

There are a couple of things here that I think are essential to starting to walk with God.

First, it is simple, so simple that even children can grasp and follow in the way of Jesus. This gets lost through history, but Jesus made following Him really simple. Be with Him, learn His teachings, put your faith in Him and learn to do life like he did.

And secondly, it is easy. Not easy in the sense that it doesn’t matter, or it doesn’t take much from us, but easy in that it is not us doing the work. When we walk in the way of Jesus, we are released from striving to be right with God through our work. The good news of Jesus coming is that not only did He do the work of suffering and dying in our place, but He gave us His Spirit so that we had His presence, His power, His wisdom and His guidance, His helper with us at every turn.

Just like Jesus lived with complete dependence on the Father and the Spirit to make it in this world, we have the same thing at our disposal.

So remember, the way of Jesus is simple and easy. You can start anytime and God will give you what you need as you go.
